Bat walk on 17 September

Announcement: The council's Ecology Officer, Simone Turner, will lead at bat walk in the cemetery on Tuesday, 17 September. It will start at 18:50 and finish at 21:00, meeting at the chapel. The event is free and everyone is welcome, including well behaved dogs and children. Wear suitable clothing and shoes and bring a small torch.

Update

The bat walk was well attended by over 30 people, young and old.

Hopefully we’ll organise up another one in early summer.

Simone writes:

Interestingly, we only confidently identified Common Pipistrelles – but in very healthy numbers. They are foraging throughout the cemetery and it would be brilliant to put up some bat boxes for them.

There was a faint possible recording of a Brown Long Eared, which would be a very exciting find, but I’m uncertain if it is correct and will get experts at Bat Conservation Trust to analyse the audio file.

We left the static bat recorder from Bat Conservation Trust at the cemetery all night, which would have recorded every bat passing by via audio. It will take them a long time to get back to us on what they uncover – so stay tuned!
